The division disembarked at Marseilles on 20 October, 1944, entering the European Theater of Operations. The division participated in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace , and Central Europe Campaigns. The division attacked and captured the fortress at Bitche, seized Fort Schiesseck, crossed the Vosges Mountains, withstood the assault of 3 German divisions in the last major counter offensive in Europe, and crossed the Neckar River at Heilbronn. The division was inactivated in Fort Patrick Henry Virginia on 10 January, 1946.
