Flying Tiger/Curtiss P-40E Warhawk/ WWII Fighter Plane Last One For Sale !! Greetings and Welcome "Flying Tigers" was the popular name of the first American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941 and 1942. They were former U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps pilots and ground crew, recruited under Presidential sanction and commanded by Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons. They trained in Burma before the American entry into WWII with the intention of defending China against Japanese forces. They first saw combat on December 20, 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor. They achieved notable success during the lowest period of the war for the U.S. and Allied Forces, giving hope to Americans that they would succeed against the Japanese. The Tigers destroyed almost 300 aircraft while losing only 14 pilots on combat missions. Just before their 50th reunion in 1992, the AVG veterans were retroactively recognized as members of the U.S. military services during the seven months the group was in combat against the Japanese. The AVG was then awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for "professionalism, dedication to duty, and extraordinary heroism." In 1996, the U.S. Air Force awarded the pilots the Distinguished Flying Cross and all the ground crew the Bronze Star. For your consideration, from my personal collection, I am offering an original, authentic, 1985 lithograph of the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk fighter aircraft of the American Volunteer Group, painted with the famous sharkmouth nose art that identified the AVG. The "Flying Tiger" insignia was created by the Walt Disney Company. The Curtiss P-40 was an American single-engine, single seat, all-metal fighter and ground attack aircraft. It had good agility, especially at high speed and medium to low altitude, being one of the tightest-turning monoplane fighters of the war. The P-40 tolerated harsh conditions in the widest possible variety of climates. It had a strong structure, including a five-spar wing, which enabled it to survive some mid-air collisions. It had armour around the engine and cockpit which enabled it to withstand considerable damage. This characteristic allowed Allied pilots in Asia and the Pacific to attack Japanese fighters head on. Tough and dependable, the P-40 was the first single-seat American fighter produced on a large scale. The lithograph was published by Air Age Publishing in 1985. The image is meticulously and expertly taken from an outstanding photograph by nationally recognized aviator, Budd Davisson. The pictured aircraft is owned and piloted by Kermit Weeks, aviation enthusiast, pilot and aircraft collector. He was twice U.S. National Aerobatic Champion and has 17 medals in world aerobatic competition as of 2000. Weeks maintains a large collection of flight worthy historic aircraft, most of which are at his Fantasy of Flight, an aviation-themed attraction, featuring the world's largest private collection of vintage aircraft. This authentic "first-run" color art lithograph was printed from the original plates in 1985 on the highest quality paper. The piece has never been matted, framed, hung nor displayed, but has been properly stored and undisturbed since creation. The lithograph which you are considering is in near mint/mint condition, clean, untouched and suitable for framing. The dimension of the image is 17.5" x 13". The dimension of the finished lithograph is 20" x 16". The lithographic workmanship in this creation is detailed and extraordinary. The colors are robust, vivid and vibrant. This would be an exciting addition for any aviation enthusiast or collector of amazing vintage aircraft. Payment, Shipping, Return & Customer Service Policies Check out my other items!
